How to Create a Great Window Display

As a small retailer your shop window is like a billboard for your store so it’s vital to make the most of that space in order to get people through your door and convert them into paying customers. You may need to invest a little time and money into designing an eye-catching window display and keeping it updated but it’ll be worth it in the long run! Follow our tips to make your store stand out to passers by:

  • Tell a story: It might be tempting to cram your window full of various items that you sell, but that can make it look cluttered and confusing. Instead, try to pick a theme and tell a story within your window display. For example a summer picnic theme, Christmas morning, or a romantic Valentine’s theme.
  • Be bold: You don’t have to be amazing at arts and crafts to make a good window display. Bold shapes and colours will make your window stand out and catch the eye of passers-by. For example if you sell knitting and sewing items you could display bright rolls of ribbon in your window or use balls of yarn to create a large pattern.
  • Add depth: It’s important to create focal points in line with people’s eye-line, but you can also mix it up a little and add some depth. Try suspending some display items from the ceiling or perhaps raising some items off the ground. Use background items and have some focal points at the forefront of the window to add depth and intrigue.
  • Keep it minimal: Avoid cluttered displays in your window. Try to keep it as minimal as possible in terms of the amount of different products you display in the window. However, multiples of one product can have an impact; for example a snowman made from ping-pong or golf balls as part of a winter themed window will look much better than a small canister of balls in the corner of the window.
  • Keep it clean: As a customer, there’s nothing more off-putting than looking into a shop window and seeing a build-up of dust and dirt on the floor and on the displayed items. As part of your daily and weekly housekeeping make sure you clean your window to keep it looking fresh and inviting.
