The importance of a great shop display for your business

Did you know, approximately 83% of the information our brains process comes through our sense of sight? Although the most important thing as a business owner is what you are selling, research suggests that how they are sold can make a huge difference to your success.. With this in mind, a well-presented business is far more important than you may initially think. With the growth of e-commerce sales, making a lasting impression on customers has become more important than ever – but there are ways that you can achieve this by creating engaging, eye-catching and memorable shop displays for your business.

Three things you can do to improve your business display

Whether you run a high street clothes store, a boutique florist or a luxury jeweller, your products deserve the best display. By following our helpful guide, you can make your retail display part of your marketing strategy, improve your customer traffic, boost sales and grow your reputation.

1. Find your unique selling point

  • Colour scheme – There are many things you can do to help your business stand out, but one of the simplest and most effective ways is using an appropriate colour scheme. Consider colours that reflect the nature of your business, making the flow-through of your shop effortless – but also bear in mind that you want to stand out against other retailers that surround you.
  • Research shows that people are more likely to remember the colour of something rather than the object itself and that shoppers decide whether they will be making a purchase within 90 seconds of seeing a product, primarily based on colour alone. So, if next door’s shop boasts bold reds, why not consider a more neutral theme to contrast and stand out?
  • Themes – Depending on the nature and size of your business, it can be tempting to create a range of different displays for different areas or products, but this can become confusing for customers. Consider choosing one theme that makes you recognisable and ties up your products nicely.

2. Interact with your customers

Have you ever gone into a shop for something and felt totally uninspired by what lies in front of you? An engaging shop display is vital for not only grabbing your customers attention, but also keeping it for the duration of their visit. Luckily, there are a few simple things you can do to better communicate with your customers and retain their interest – hopefully resulting in a sale!

  • Stay relevant – It can be easier than you think to accidentally mislead your customers with fancy displays that include an array of props and colours. Be careful that the products you display are accurately representing your business, and that props you use aren’t overshadowing the products themselves
  • Be experimental – We don’t suggest you change up the layout of your shop every week, but experimenting with different displays can help keep things fresh and engaging to returning customers. Make it so your customers want to come back and see what you’ve done differently!
  • Use visual planes – If you really want to engage your customers, try making the most out of the different visual planes. Have you ever been to a children’s toy store and found that everything is below eye level? This is so that their product is easily accessible to their target audience.
  • So why not try putting your premium products at eye level, with a few of your best-selling products displayed at a 90-degree angle rather than flat on a display unit – this will help customers engage with the product as soon as they walk in.

3. Be spatially aware

We understand the pride that comes with owning your own business, and so it can be easy to get carried away and want to display everything you have to offer. Unfortunately, doing this can have a negative impact on the efficacy of your shop display. Try not to overcrowd clothing racks or jam-pack display units. When it comes to a good shop display, less is more!

  • Find your balance – Whilst it’s true that a crowded store is likely to have customers running in the opposite direction, the same can also be said for a sparse shop with only a couple of products on display. Finding the right balance for the type of business you own will help you not only bring customers in but keep them.
  • Be strategic – We have all been victim to those clever little impulse-buys when you are going to pay for your shopping. This is a result of strategic display tactics, and it is certainly something worth implementing in your own shop if you haven’t already.
  • Be clear –Not every customer will ask you where something is kept if they can’t see it for themselves. For many shoppers, the inconvenience of having to ask outweighs anything else and they are likely to go to one of your competitors - so make sure your store is set out clearly to avoid this.
